Laura’s Loom
High Brigflatts, Sedbergh, LA10 5HN (By appointment only.)
Following a desire to create something beautiful from top quality Yorkshire Dales wool, I began to source fleece from local farms in 2008. By 2009 I had produced my first batch of blankets. They were woven on a vintage loom at Farfield Mill in Sedbergh and the sense of accomplishment was huge. It was a steep learning curve. At that time wool was being burned all over the country and the wool price was at rock bottom. I learned what to do by visiting scouring, spinning, weaving and cloth finishing mills across the north. I made friends with more farmers, collected more wool, made more yarn and now I’m running a successful little business. My aim was always and still is to create the highest quality products from locally sourced wool. I wanted to show that British wool is more than good enough for beautiful scarves and blankets. Keeping processing and production within as tight a geographic circle as possible, and as environmentally friendly as possible, was a major goal right from the start. Promoting the amazing area in which I live and work and giving back to my community is also very important to me.
