Ali Sharman is a handweaver based at Farfield Mill, just outside Sedbergh in Cumbria. She weaves tweed by hand working primarily with British wool as well as mill ends that might otherwise go to landfill.
Ali takes her inspiration from the Howgill Fells which overlook her workshop. She launched Howgill Cloth in 2019 working with textile manufacturers based in Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders to produce short runs of tweed. Ali aims to show that it is possible to make beautiful, long lasting cloth with traceable provenance in a sustainable manner by using locally sourced fleece – an undervalued resource that is all too often considered ‘waste’.
Ali is a member of the Lancs and Lakes Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers which she chaired from 2016-18. She has exhibited nationally with the Association, demonstrates at local art trails and fairs and provides weaving tuition and workshops.
